14 people died in an accident when the right front tire of this truck came apart on a road near San Antonio. The details of the tragic accident that took the lives of 14 people Sunday evening have been all over the news. You’ve probably already heard that the Ford F250 was carrying 23 people when it suddenly veered off the road in Goliad County and collided with a tree. Sadly, of the 23 men, women, and children who were riding in the truck, 14 have been pronounced dead, and the remaining 9 were hospitalized in either critical or grave condition. While the exact identities of the victims of this crash have not all been discovered, authorities suspect they were illegal immigrants, coming from Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
At the time of the accident, authorities were unable to report on what may have caused the truck to veer off the road and collide with a tree. However, representatives of the DPS reported earlier today that it appears as if the right front tire of the truck came apart while the truck was en route. So this fatal accident near San Antonio was caused by a tire.

I don’t know about you, but this sad series of events leaves me with one nagging question. What would have caused that tire to come apart as the truck was driving, not on a rough rural road, but on Hwy 59? After a little research I discovered reports of a voluntary recall that gives me a sense of déjà vu. The Continental Tire Company has voluntarily recalled over 390,000 tires, most of which were installed as original equipment on 2008 and 2009 Ford F250 and F350 pickup trucks. The recall was issued for incidents of uneven wear, and in worst cases, tread separating from the side walls of the tires. Could this have caused the problem? I don’t really know, but I do know this recall sounds vaguely familiar. It wasn’t that long ago when the news was filled with stories of tire recalls and accidents caused by tread separation on Ford vehicles. However, I have not seen any news coverage about this problem, so you may be driving one of these potentially dangerous vehicles.
