Unlicensed Driver Charged With Manslaughter

KXAN– According to Austin police, 21-year-old Bernadette Gonzales was charged with manslaughter for the deadly crash that killed 18-year-old passenger Frank Ramos in December.

On December 20, Gonzales was running late taking passengers to work when the vehicle suffered a tire blowout, and she lost control. Ramos was found on the side of the road and transported to a local hospital where he died two days later.

Gonzales told police she was traveling about 65 mph while driving northbound on Interstate 35 near exit 213, close to Ranch to Market 150 in Kyle. She tried breaking and controlling the wheel, which sent the vehicle into a ditch. Officials stated that Gonzales was driving without a license and not wearing a seatbelt. She was also driving on little sleep, had an alcohol level of 0.034, and was using meth hours before the accident.

Added Charges

Less than two weeks later, Gonzales was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, theft and 11 counts of credit card abuse. Police said she stole a checkbook from the Hopkins Street H-E-B in San Marcos. An employee said they tried stopping her but, she pulled a knife out towards them. When an officer saw and stopped Gonzales, she told him her grandmother had given her the items. He later noticed she was hiding something and found five Bud Light beer cans in her pants and bra.

Hays County District Attorney Wes Mau says cases involving unlicensed drivers follow the same process in court as cases involving licensed drivers. Unlicensed driver data was not available for Hays County, however in Austin, according to APD, the total number of drivers involved in fatal car crashes who have suspended licenses or no licenses at all in 2015 and 2016 amounts to nearly 50. Police say there were 31 in 2015 and 18 in 2016.
