About Austin TX

Austin, Texas has had numerous white pioneers that arrived on this gentle bend in the Colorado River long before the first cornerstone of the settlement was laid.

For numerous years, the nomadic tribes of the Lipan Apaches, Tonkawa and Comanche Indian tribes hunted and camped next to the creeks, that included what is currently known as Barton Springs. The Spanish established temporary missions in the region, during the late 1700s. The first permanent white pioneers arrived in the area and named their settlement Waterloo during the 1830s.

The small settlement of Waterloo was selected to be the capital of the new Republic of Texas in 1839. A new settlement was rapidly established in the wilderness, and Stephen F. Austin was the namesake of this settlement, who came to be known as the father of Texas.

Sometime later, a Judge named Edwin Waller, who was to become the first mayor of the community, surveyed the location for the community and laid out a street plan that has remains mostly intact to this day. In 1839, the complete government of the Republic of Texas arrived in oxcarts from Houston. The population of the community had increased to some 856 residents by the following January.

The new plan for Austin included a hilltop location for the capitol building that from the head of a broad Congress Avenue, that looking down towards the Colorado River. Pecan Street, which is currently known as sixth street and the Avenue have remained the principal business streets in Austin for the past 150 years. In 1845, it took two elections statewide to maintain Austin as the capital city, once Texas was annexed by America.

Austin had become a city by the 1880’s. The grand capital building was being advertised as the world’s seventh largest building in 1888. This building was completed on the location that was initially selected in the plan of 1839. The funding for this endeavor was provided by some very creative financing that involved the famous XIT Ranch. On the skyline of Austin, this building is still a central landmark. Of course, it has also remained the center of one of the most prominent government industries in Austin. The Public Schools on the city of Austin admitted their first classes In September of 1881. The Normal and the Tillotson Institutes, which was the predecessor of the Tillotson/Huston College opened its doors during that same year. There was some opposition to the efforts to locate the new University of Texas in Austin. However, the parents were warned that to send their children to school so close to lawmakers would be a bad influence on their morals.

Another milestone in the growth of Austin was the construction of the Great Granite Dam on the Colorado River in 1893. This dam provided hydraulic power to generate electricity by stabilizing the river. This, in turn, drew the attention of some manufacturers. However, this dam was replaced by some seven dams that were funded by the U.S. government by 1938. A young congressman named Lyndon Baines Johnson was one of the officials who helped develop these public works projects. Congressman Johnson got his start doing government work in Austin.

The seeds of the future of Austin as a center for high technology were being planted very carefully, as Austin successfully emerged from the Great Depression. There were many think tanks and research laboratories that had been established by the 1950’s, which started attracting high tech businesses as well as some innovative thinkers to the region. This trend is continuing. As the economy in Austin prospered, the region drew even more modern amenities. These amenities included a professional baseball team, a branch library system, more public swimming pools, and many different movie theaters arrived.

During the 1970’s, the rapid growth contributed to additional political activity, only this time it was aimed at the local level. Strong historic preservation, environmental, and neighborhoods were established and are still an integral part of the civic life today in Austin. There is a special concern regarding the purity of the water that flows from Barton Springs, which has resulted in to this landmark becoming an icon.

All throughout history many diverse cultural groups have been drawn to Austin, which includes immigrants from Asia, Mexico, Africa, and Europe. All of these groups have enriched the cultural and civic life in Austin, which includes the recent establishment as being the mecca for music fans. During the 1970’s, the musical rebirth in Austin started.
