KXAN– Wednesday night three people died in a two-vehicle crash in Gillespie County. A Camry carrying 82-year-old Shirley Rackley, her 83-year-old husband, Ray Rackley of Kerrville and an SUV carrying four teenagers, ages 18, 17 and 14, all from Fredericksburg, crashed on State Highway 16 approximately 20 miles south of Fredericksburg.
A report stated that an 18-year-old driver was traveling on SH 16 in a 2005 Toyota Sequoia with the three passengers. The driver entered the southbound lane and struck the Rackley’s 2014 Toyota Camry head-on. Both Rackley’s died at the scene, and 18-year-old passenger, Wyatt Herbert, of the SUV died at a local hospital. The three others are in stable condition.
This accident is seven days into what is dubbed the “100 deadliest days for teenage drivers,” A report by the AAA Foundation for Safety shows the average number of fatal crashes involving teenage drivers climbs about 15% between June 1 and Labor Day. The study also shows that 60% of teen crashes involve distracted drivers. According to the study, the most common behavior that teens were seen engaging was attending to a passenger.
