For many years, technology has helped keep drivers safe and provided data to insurance companies on their drivers’ behavior. The insurance company USAA has continued this trend through several years of testing and development of the SafePilot app. USAA recently announced that they can now record accident data of customers who’ve downloaded the SafePilot app. This data can help USAA and other parties better evaluate the extent of an accident, as well as let users file a claim from their phones.
What Is SafePilot?
SafePilot was first introduced in 2018 and has been refined in the years since. The goal of the program is to encourage users to drive more safely by offering incentives in the form of lower premiums. Users can receive a discount of between 5 and 20 percent on their premiums, depending on how safe they drive. Things like speeding, hard braking, and using your phone while driving will result in a lower discount.
Unlike other apps from rival insurance companies, SafePilot does not require any external hardware to function properly, which makes it simpler for end-users.
How It Records the Data
Once USAA customers download the app to their phones, the app uses GPS technology and other systems to analyze what drivers are doing as they’re driving. The app takes this GPS data and other information and feeds the data to USAA’s insurance adjusters and other team members.
How It Helps You and Us If You Are Ever in an Accident
Since November 2019, USAA has collected this data into what it calls a digital forensics portal. If a customer reports an accident, a USAA insurance adjuster can access the portal and use the data from their phone to validate the information supplied by the customer. This sharing of information speeds up the claims process and provides crucial information to the insurance adjuster about the accident.
If you’re involved in an accident, you’ll need to establish that the other driver was at fault before you can recover any compensation. USAA’s SafePilot app provides another way for your insurance company and your car accident attorney to verify the facts of your case and show the other driver was responsible.
Because the SafePilot app keeps track of things like your speed and your driving behavior, you may be able to use the data to help show that you were following the rules of the road in the moments leading up to the accident. You can also use the data to help show that you are generally a good driver, which is useful if the other driver attempts to blame you for the accident.
Technology can be helpful in a car accident case, but you’ll need the help of an experienced lawyer following a vehicle collision to protect your rights and fight for maximum compensation. Contact the Ketterman Rowland & Westlund today to learn more about how we can help you with your claim.
