What is Asbestos, and Who Can Be Affected By It?

Asbestos is a mineral used in a variety of construction materials used in Eunice, and has many other uses because of its fire-retardant and insulating properties. The danger lies in the microscopic fibers that can be inhaled, which damage the lungs and causes cancers, including Mesothelioma. These fibers can also attach themselves to clothing, which means you can be at risk for Mesothelioma even if you are not working directly with asbestos. If you are exposed to asbestos in your Vinton home or on the job, you may not develop Mesothelioma for many years. This underscores why it’s so important to speak with a Vinton Mesothelioma Attorney immediately if you’ve been diagnosed with this terrible disease.

The south is always a great place to see the Civil War reenactments. The town of Vinton in the Calcasieu Parish in Louisiana is one such place where residents do reenactments at Niblett’s Bluff Park. This was prompted by the fact that the town was where many Civil War events took place. It’s a small town, with less than 5,000 residents, but it continues to grow and many of the people here love to explore their area’s colorful history.

Vinton used to be merely dry land, frontier country with no large buildings and hardly any people. Now, it’s a small but busy town, alive with many of its residents doing business and having fun at the local hotspots. The area where Vinton now stood used to be a neutral territory because Spain, France, and Mexico were fighting over the land. During the 19th century, however, Confederate soldiers traveled through the place and cut a path from Niblett’s Bluff to Alexandria City. The bluff soon became Fort Niblett, which helped the Confederates during the Battle of Mansfield. Even now, the fortress is preserved as part of the bluff’s park and the city’s history.

The city’s community center and park offer a pool area, a playground, and fields for baseball and American football. Aside from that, the Niblett’s Bluff Park also offers a historic and scenic area for learning and relaxation. It overlooks the Sabine River and offers a wide area for picnics and camping. There are RV sites with water, electricity, and sewer. The park also offers small and large pavilions for parties and gatherings. There is also a boat launch area for those who want to fish in the nearby river.

One of the major draws of the area, though, is the Civil War battle reenactments. The area was a Civil War camping ground among Confederate soldiers, which prompted many residents to take interest in the town’s Civil War history. During the spring, the town hosts a festival and reenactment. Aside from the soldiers running around with their guns in their navy costumes, there are women in period clothes stitching or knitting in tents, people shouting orders on horsebacks, and others dressed in black to mourn the dead soldiers.

Although Vinton now is a lively town, it used to be a very rural backwater town with hardly any development. That is until a railroad was built through the area. Businessman JP Morgan decided to bring his Louisiana and Texas Railroad Company to the area to build tracks from New Orleans, Louisiana to Beaumont, Texas. That sparked a boom in the town’s economy, prompting many offices, depots, and residences to be built.

A doctor from Indiana and Iowa named Dr. Seaman A. Knapp arrived in town, which solidified the town’s progress. Knapp bought a land from the United States government, where the basis of Vinton now stands. The origin of the town’s name is still disputed, but many believe that Knapp named the town after his own hometown, Vinton, Iowa. Soon after the doctor’s arrival, petroleum was discovered at Ged Lake and Vinton became a major draw for businesses and workers.

Vinton started to boom as a railroad depot, then began diversifying its industry into lumber and petroleum. Because of the many work opportunities, several people from out of state began to settle into Vinton. Many of them came from Iowa, in part because of Seaman Knapp’s efforts. In fact, many of the old families that gave their names to the town’s streets were from Iowa, like the Stevenson, Morgan, Nelson, Fairchild, Banker, Horridge, and Stockwell among others.

The town soon saw the construction of sawmills, a Methodist Church, and schools. The first school operated in 1890, but it was a small one. A bigger one was later established in 1901. Although Vinton is known for its laid-back and scenic areas, it also offers a surprisingly glamorous side. The town is home to the Delta Downs Racetrack Casino and Hotel. Visitors can watch horse races and entertainment shows, join casino games, and visit fine dining restaurants for an unforgettable evening. There are also several resto-bars and grills in town for when you want to watch a game with your friends like the Grillers Burgers, Delta Downs Vista Grills, and the Longhorn Hard Country Café.

The town is small and many of the activities focus around family fun events. There are only three schools in Vinton, for elementary, middle school, and high school. Almost everyone knows one another. Because of the closeness between the residents, celebrations are always warm and familiar. Although not as flamboyant and huge as their other neighbors, the Vinton Mardi Gras celebration is still a highly awaited event where there’s loud music, parties on the streets, and colorful floats. Vinton is a small but exciting town and is a perfect escape from the huge, bustling cities in the south.
