News4SanAntonio reported that a volunteer firefighter from Silsbee has died at a hospital after he was struck by a vehicle while working the scene of an accident in the city in Hardin County, about 30 minutes north of Beaumont, Texas. The accident happened late Wednesday afternoon on FM 418, about a half-mile east of FM 92 in Silsbee. The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the firefighter’s death, though authorities are not yet releasing his name until they notify his family. A longtime firefighter from Silsbee told KFDM the death is the first of a Silsbee firefighter in the line of duty that he can recall.
Hardin County deputies reported that Silsbee volunteer firefighters had responded to an accident in which a car ran off the road this afternoon. They were doing traffic control when another driver struck the firefighter. He was rushed to CHRISTUS Hospital St. Elizbeth in Beaumont where he died.
Firefighters are gathering Wednesday night at their station in Silsbee to comfort one another. Firefighters from several other volunteer departments in the region are also there to offer support.
Hardin County Sheriff Mark Davis spoke with KFDM/KBTV by phone.
“Working an accident scene is always precarious,” Davis said. “You rely on help from first responders and volunteers. They play such a critical role in our community. A majority of our first responders are volunteers. They’re truly public servants. They want to give back to their community. Working car crashes and house fires is dangerous. Bad things can happen. All first responders share the common goal: compassion for their community. They care for the people they live and work among. And they want to help their fellow man in a time of need.”
Traffic on FM 418 in Silsbee is closed due to the accident.
The flag at the Silsbee Fire Department is at half-staff for the fallen firefighter.
Lumberton firefighters were keeping two fire trucks at the Silsbee Fire Station and helping answer calls as needed throughout the night.
The 100 Club of Southeast Texas will help the family of the firefighter with a check on Thursday.
